Misfit flies:
.
.
Misfit flies are
my project flies. Some are fishable,
some need refinement and others are....just
plain experiments. This is my fun
page displaying a mix of ideas,
functionality, innovation in an eclectic fly
tying manner. Enjoy!

Dougherty's
Weedless Popper takes advantage of the newer
hook styles offered for plastic worm
fishing. While most poppers fish with
their hook points down, Dougherty's Weedless
Popper utilizes the hook's design to fish
point up. This innovative use of a new
hook style places the point further from
obstructions and water hazards.
.
Created in the
summer of 2004, Dougherty's Weedless Popper
is a new pattern, and as such requires
further water testing to determine
fishability. The pattern may undergo
further refinement.

Dougherty's Pipe
Fly incorporates three different techniques
I wanted to experiment with; 1. fusing two
tubes, 2. creating a wide/fat body with
epoxy and 3. using tape and nail polish to
create a well defined no-run colored head.
Technique 1 is accomplished by
Chinese-fingering two tubes of different
sizes together. Epoxy is used as the
adhesive. Technique 2 uses epoxy
liberally applied to the tube along with
finger pressure to flair the tube.
The desired position is held until the epoxy
sets. Technique 3 uses plain
transparent tape to create a sharp edge.
Fingernail polish is used to create a hard
shiny finish.
.
Color and flash
can vary and are left to artistic flare.

This is a very
durable pattern that provides a wide narrow
profile perfect for imitating bunker,
butterfish and the likes. The fly is
tied similar to a double bunny but uses
select craft fur. Select craft fur
provides the length required for the wide
baitfish profile. Additionally, the
select craft fur's plastic matrix backing
provides durability. If this same
patterns is tied using a cloth backing the
fly pulls apart and disintegrates. The
first 1- 2 inches of the fly is left uncut
to provide movement. The remaining
portion of the fly is trimmed to the desired
baitfish shape. Although this is a
durable and accurately-shaped fly, the glue
used to adhere the two craft fur pieces
reduces movement.
